How it works

  1. Write

    Write or paste Tamil where you already write: a text box, Gmail, your blog editor.

  2. Check

    Press check. Thiruttham marks what it would change, and nothing else.

  3. Decide

    Accept or dismiss each suggestion, and undo a change right after you accept it. Nothing changes until you click.

    After words ending in ஆக or என, the next hard consonant doubles.

Taking a consonant away

அவர் எல்லாவற்றையும் தெரிந்துக் கொண்டார்.

  • வினையெச்சத் தொடரில் தேவையற்ற வல்லினத்தை நீக்குதல்

    After a soft-cluster participle (என்று, கொண்டு, இணைந்து…), no consonant is doubled; a doubled spelling in a closed list is corrected by removing the consonant.

The checker also takes a consonant away where one was added by mistake.

Spoken to written

    Spoken plural pronouns are written in full (நாங்க → நாங்கள், மத்தவங்க → மற்றவர்கள்).

  • நேரம் குறிக்கும் சொற்களின் எழுத்து வடிவம்

    A spoken time word has a standard written form (நேத்து → நேற்று, இப்ப → இப்போது, எப்போ → எப்போது).

  • ‘கிட்ட’ என்பதற்குப் பதில் ‘இடம்’

    The spoken form that ends in கிட்ட (to or from a person) becomes the written form with இடம் (அவன்கிட்ட → அவனிடம்).

  • எண்ணுப் பெயர்களின் எழுத்து வடிவம்

    Spoken number words are written in full (ஒண்ணு → ஒன்று, ரெண்டு → இரண்டு, மூணு → மூன்று).

  • எதிர்மறை வினையின் எழுத்து வடிவம்

    A spoken negative verb becomes the written negative (புரியல → புரியவில்லை).

The written forms come from a list of spoken words. It is a list, not all spoken Tamil, and the setting can be switched off.
