Tamil spell check online: what the free check covers
- Consonant doubling (ottru) after அந்த, இந்த and எந்த (doubling after pointing words); after ஆக and என (doubling after ஆக and என); after the object ending ஐ (doubling after the object marker ஐ) and the dative ending கு, in the listed forms.
- A short list of standard spellings.
- A list of 45 common spoken words and endings and their written forms (you can turn it off).
Each suggestion shows why. Nothing changes until you accept it, and you can undo an accepted change straight away.
What it does not cover
- Similar-sounding letters (ர and ற, ல and ள and ழ, ந and ண and ன) and agreement between subject and verb depend on meaning. A fixed rule cannot decide them. They need the AI-assisted check, which needs a sign-in.
- It cannot tell a name from a word. Add names to your protected words (after you sign in) and they are never changed.
- It does not rewrite or translate.

Where to use it

Will it change names?
Nothing is applied until you accept it. Words on your protected list are never changed.
Is there a Tamil spell checker for MS Word?
Thiruttham has no add-in for Microsoft Word. Paste your text into the box above, or use the web editor, then copy the corrected text back into Word. Opening a .docx file in the editor is part of the paid plans and the 7-day trial; a .txt file opens on any plan.
Can I check a PDF?
Not directly. Copy the text out of the PDF and paste it into the box above; pasted text is checked the same way. If the pasted Tamil looks broken, the PDF does not hold real Unicode text and it cannot be checked.
Does it check grammar too?
The fixed rules cover consonant doubling, some standard spellings and colloquial words, replaced by their written form. Agreement between subject and verb and similar-sounding letters need the AI-assisted check, which needs a sign-in. The grammar checker page explains the split.
