Doubling after the object marker ஐ

When the object marker ஐ is written out and the next word begins with க, ச, த or ப, a matching consonant is added before it: மலரைப் பறி, கதவைத் தட்டு.

When it applies

  1. The marker ஐ must be written out on the word that names the thing acted on: மலரைப் பறித்தான்.
  2. The next word must begin with க, ச, த or ப: கதவைத் திறந்தான்.
  3. The matching consonant is then added before that next word: பாடலைக் கேட்டாள்; பாயைச் சுருட்டினான்.

Examples

Exceptions

  • Do not use this rule where the marker ஐ is hidden. கனியைத் தின்றான் has the marker written out; கனி தின்றான் has it hidden.
  • If the next word does not begin with க, ச, த or ப, this rule adds no consonant.
  • Do not assume that every sentence with the marker ஐ is written the same way; look at how the next word begins and how the sentence is built.

Is the consonant doubled wherever the marker ஐ appears?

No. Look at how the next word begins and whether the marker ஐ is written out.

Why is the consonant not doubled in கனி தின்றான்?

The object marker ஐ is hidden in that sentence. When the marker is hidden, the consonant is not doubled.

Does the Thiruttham checker catch this?

Only in part. Since 2026-10-26 the checker adds the consonant after one reliable kind of object ending, and a separate rule covers forms of the dative. It still does not mark most other words that end in ஐ, because the ending of a word alone cannot tell the marker from an ordinary noun ending. This page explains the whole rule; the checker does not mark every case.
