Tamil grammar checking, one suggestion at a time

Thiruttham checks formal written Tamil in two layers: fixed rules that run in your browser, and an AI-assisted check for mistakes that depend on meaning. It proposes small edits, shows the reason for each, and changes nothing until you accept.

Replace the sample below with your own Tamil and press Check. The box runs the fixed rules only; agreement between subject and verb and similar-sounding letters need the AI-assisted check, which needs a sign-in.

Real corrections

Each text below is corrected by the fixed rules exactly as shown, and the corrected text needs nothing more from them. The texts are written for this page. The Tamil spelling rules explain each rule on its own page.

What the AI-assisted check adds

  • Similar-sounding letters: ர and ற, ல and ள and ழ, ந and ண and ன.
  • Agreement between subject and verb, in gender and in number.
  • Spoken forms that have a written form, beyond the short list the fixed rules use.

One of these look-alike groups already has a reference page: Tamil words that differ by one letter lists each pair with its meaning and an example sentence, so you can see which word you meant.

It needs a sign-in. On the free plan the first 5 AI corrections of each day are open, and the AI reads the first 500 words of a text; further suggestions are marked with a dotted underline so you can see where they are. You can start a 7-day trial of Pro yourself, once, with no payment needed, and Pro is ₹299 a month or ₹2,799 a year. The pricing page has the details.

What it will not do

  • Change your text without your click.
  • Change words on your protected list, such as names.
  • Rewrite, translate or draft text for you.
  • Promise to be right every time. The AI can propose a change to a word that is correct; that is why every change is yours to accept or dismiss.
Can I correct Tamil grammar in my browser?

Yes, in two ways. The web editor and the free check box on this page run in the browser. The Chrome extension checks the text box you are writing in, such as Gmail or WordPress. The AI-assisted check needs a sign-in.

Is Tamil grammar checking free?

The fixed rule checks are free and unlimited, and need no account. The AI-assisted check needs a sign-in. On the free plan the first 5 AI corrections of each day are shown in full, the AI reads the first 500 words of a text, and further suggestions are marked with a dotted underline. You can start a 7-day trial of Pro yourself, once, with no payment needed. The pricing page has the details.

What is the difference between the rules and the AI?

The rules are written code that runs in your browser and gives the same answer every time. The AI-assisted check tries to flag mistakes that depend on meaning, such as similar-sounding letters and agreement between subject and verb. It can be wrong, and it shows only the edits it is confident about. Every suggestion says which one made it.

Which Tamil grammar mistakes does the free check find?

The fixed rules find missing consonant doubling (ottru) after certain words, standard spellings and colloquial words, replaced by their written form. Mistakes that depend on meaning, such as agreement between subject and verb, need the AI-assisted check after sign-in. Neither layer is always right.

Will it change my text without asking?

No. It never changes a word on your protected list, such as a name. It proposes small edits with the reason for each, and nothing changes until you accept it. You can undo an accepted change straight away.

Can it be wrong?

Yes. Both the rules and the AI can be wrong. You can dismiss any suggestion, add a word to your protected list so it is never changed, or report a wrong correction.

Does it rewrite or translate my text?

No. It only proposes small corrections to the text you wrote.
