Doubling after ஆக, ஆய் and என

After a verb form ending in ஆக or ஆய், or after என, a matching consonant is added before a next word that begins with க, ச, த or ப: செய்வதாகக் கூறினார், வருவதாய்ச் சொன்னாள், எனக் கூறினார்.

When it applies

  1. After a verb form ending in ஆக, when the next word begins with க, ச, த or ப, the matching consonant is added: அவர் உதவி செய்வதாகக் கூறினார்.
  2. After a verb form ending in ஆய், the matching consonant is added before the next word's first consonant: அவள் நாளை வருவதாய்ச் சொன்னாள்.
  3. After என, the matching consonant is added before the next word's first consonant: மாணவன் நாளை வருவான் எனக் கூறினான்.
  4. The same is said of some adverb forms, such as நன்றாகச் சொன்னான் and வேகமாகக் கூறினான், which the Tamil Virtual Academy lists among the places where the consonant is doubled.

Why does the added consonant change from one sentence to another?

It depends on the next word. A word beginning with க takes க், one beginning with ச takes ச், and so on for த and ப.

Does the Thiruttham checker catch this?

The fixed rules check words ending in ஆக and என. They do not apply the rule to the ஆய் forms, so the checker can leave those unmarked.
